An example of using social media for good.

Compare the number of  Facebook users to people on the planet 200 years ago

There are more people on Facebook than there was in the world 200 years ago.

Who is Jacob?  Where is he?

Jacob is Jason and Gavin’s friend. Jacob is in Uganda, Central Africa.

What happened to Jacob’s brother?

His brother tried to escape the bad people in Uganda so they cut his neck and killed him.

What would young Uganda children  rather do than stay on earth?

Because there is no one taking care of the children.

What is the promise made to Jacob?

That they are going to stop the bad guys.

Who is the LRA?  Who is the leader?  Who is the bad guy?

Lord’s Resistance Army. The leader and the bad guy is Joseph Kony.

Why is he bad?

Because he steals the children away from their families and forces them to do bad things. He turns the boys into young soldiers, turns the girls into sex slaves and makes the boys kill their own parents.

How many children has he stolen so far?

Over 30,000 children.

Who is number one on the war crimes list?

Joseph Kony.

99 percent of people on Earth do not know what?

They don’t know who Joseph Kony is.

Why did the U.S. not get involved?

Because we are not in danger and it’s not messing with the money.

Explain, “Where you live should not determine if you live.”

Just because you live in Uganda, doesn’t mean you won’t live.

How does the movement make a difference?

They rebuilt schools, created jobs and they built a warning system.

Why do you think politicians began to speak up?

Because of media and they wanted to get re-elected and thought people actually cared so they should too.

What does Barack Obama say in October 2011?

They are going to send U.S. troops to Central Africa to help in Uganda.

Why does Kony change tactics?

Because he’s scared from hearing the U.S. troops are there.

In order for people to care, what must be done?

They have to actually know who Joseph Kony is.

What does make him famous mean?

They are going to make him a household name by having celebrities talk about him.

What happened in April of 2012?

They just put posters everywhere.

How can the Facebook world help?

  1.  No, I think he is weird.

2.  No I am not affected by what others post.  I buy what I want to buy.

3.  Yes, I did want to try the chicken sandwich from Popeyes after the Twitter feud with Chick-Fil-a.

4. If I am on social media, colleges or future employers would think that I’m all about myself and they would probably think all I do is spend time on social media.

5. No, I don’t think that this is fair.

6. If you google Jennifer Frankling you would find her Instagram page, her Youtube channel and her job.

  1. What do you like about social media? I like that we can express ourselves to the world and interact with our friends and other people around the world.
  2. What don’t you like? I don’t like that people end up sending so much negativity to people. Especially if they know nothing about that person.
  3. How do things on social media impact your life offline? Social media impacts my life offline because it makes me realize how judgmental the world is.
  4. Do you ever witness or experience people fighting online or posting something to make
    other people mad? Yes.
  5. Posting, sharing, liking or commenting on pictures/statuses/videos/etc. that include
guns, drugs, wads of cash, fights, threats, promoting violence, promoting a crew/gang ,
etc can link youth to criminal activity and can create consequences such as
getting arrested, suspended, expelled, fired, or rejected from a job, school, or
scholarship.  What do you think about that? I agree with this because kids like to follow behind other people and sometimes kids do it just to fit in.
  6. Some colleges and employers request your social media usernames and passwords to be considered
for admissions or hiring– this provides them access to look through all of the applicant’s social media history, messages and posts.  Is this fair? No, this is not fair because social media has nothing to do with education or work and it’s not professional.
  7. When your friends are having an argument in-person, what do you do to calm them down? I like to show them something funny that I’ve found on Instagram, I could say something funny that I heard off of Instagram or I could talk to them both and we would all talk again.
Do you think this approach would be different online? How is it different? No, because it’ll make the argument worst because they would take what I’m saying different because it’s over text.
  8. Have you heard of cyber banging? No.
  9. Most teens say social media makes them feel better, not worse, about themselves.  What do you think? I think it’s true because some people like to post themselves on instagram or snapchat to get likes and positive comments.
  10. “Eighty-nine percent of teens have their own smartphones.  They grew up alongside Instagram and Snapchat. They do research papers on Google Classroom, find emotional support on teen forums, share poetry on Tumblr, and are more likely to text “I love you” before they’d ever say it to your face.”  Do you see yourself in any of these statements?  Explain. Yes. I have my own smartphone (iPhone), I’ve had snapchat for a long time now, I do my research papers on Google Classroom and I’ve sent “I love you” to my boyfriend before I could say it to his face.
  11. They can’t stop. They won’t stop.  Most teens think technology companies manipulate users to spend more time on their devices. Many of them also think that social media distracts them and their friends.  Do you agree with this statement?  Explain. Yes, because when I am hanging with a friend or my family, I end up on snapchat or Instagram because of the notifications I get.
  12. Snapchat and Instagram are where it’s at. In 2012, Facebook dominated social networking use among teens. Today, only 15 percent say it’s their main site (when one 16-year-old girl was asked in a focus group whom she communicates with on Facebook, she replied, “My grandparents”).  True? Yes.
  13. Social media takes teens away from personal relationships and distracts them from paying attention to the people they’re with.  Agree? Yes.
  14. Exposure to hate speech is on the rise, while cyberbullying is less commonOnly 13 percent of teens report ever being cyberbullied. But nearly two-thirds say they often or sometimes come across racist, sexist, homophobic or religious-based hate content in social media.  Is this true? Yes.
